1985- The National Science Foundation commissions the creation of National Science Foundation Network or better known as the NSFNET. The NSFNET was a major factor in the success of the internet at the very beginning.

1995- VocalTec releases the first commercial Internet phone software. It was this VocalTec VoIP program that was the first patented VoIP program. VocalTec is still a major player in the VoIP market today and continues to grow. VocalTec is listed on NASDAQ under VOCL.

1996- US telecommunication companies petition the US Congress to ban Internet phone technology because they see the potential that VoIP has. They are scared that it will cost them customers and more importantly cost them money.

1997- Level 3, one of the largest internet developlement firms, began the research and manufacture of its first softswitch. A softswitch is a central device in a telecommunications network which connects calls from one phone line to another, entirely by means of software running on a computer system. This work was formerly carried out by hardware, with physical switchboards to route the calls. Softswitches save the companies a lot of money.

1999- The Session Initiation Protocol specification RFC 2543 is released. The Session Initiation Protocol is a signaling protocol, widely used for controlling multimedia communication sessions such as voice and video calls over Internet Protocol.

2004- Commercial VoIP service providers proliferate.

2005- OpenSER (later Kamailio and OpenSIPS) SIP proxy server is forked from the SIP Express Router.

2006- FreeSWITCH open source software is released. FreeSWITCH includes many modules which provide applications by default including conferencing, control of live calls, Interactive voice response, TTS/ASR (text to speech/automatic speech recognition), Public switched telephone network interconnection ability supporting both analogue and digital circuits, Voice over IP protocols including SIP, Inter-Asterisk eXchange, H.323, XMPP, and GoogleTalk. Applications using the FreeSWITCH library can be written in many scripting languages including Python, Perl, Lua, JavaScript using Mozilla's SpiderMonkey engine, Java and Microsoft .NET via Microsoft's CLR or via Mono.

2009- VoIP continues to grow and become more popular as the price of VoIP continues to drop. More and more people are dropping their land line telephone plans in exchange for VoIP.

The history of VoIP may be part of the history, but it stills play a large part in the growth of VoIP. Without the strong foundation that VoIP was designed and built on there is no way that VoIP could be what it is today and what it will be in the future.
